One of my passions is turkey hunting. I love to deer hunt but calling in a big gobbler is unsurpassed in my 30 years of hunting! There is NOTHING like talking to a big ole tom and have him talk back to you! Spring turkey hunting also has a lot of other benefits as all the leaves are gone from the trees and deer hunters can spot old scrapes and rubs much easier. Plus, you can find sheds from the previous year and trails!

Anyway, back to turkey hunting.  I have found that the biggest thing people do wrong with turkey hunting is being too aggressive.  Once you have located a big tom be careful not to try and work that bird too fast! If ole tom is coming, let him come! There is no need to call when the bird is on his way.  He knows where you are! If the bird turns or waivers off course then purr or cluck (according to how close he is) when necessary to keep him coming but only as much as needed. Here is the big thing though, when he does get close enough for the s hot then you should be ready not getting ready! That is when a lot of people fumble the ball!  A turkey’s eyesight is his primary weapon and far better than a deer’s.  In the end, you are only going to be as good as you practice and prepare so plan your hunt well and be prepared when the opportunity presents itself.
